GRAMMER 101: Lesson 2 - Copy Cat "G"

"G" usually copies "j" when it is followed by "e", "i", or "y".

"S" copies "z" when it is surrounded by vowels or at the end of a word, except after "f", "k", "o", or "t".

Every grammar lesson has a basic foundation.  I think it's safe to say that if you are reading this, you have a pretty solid foundation :) but here is a little refresher:

Sixteen letters make only ONE sound.

• b, d, f, h, j, k, l, m, n, p, q, r, t, v, x, z. 

Ten letters make more than one sounds.

• Five vowels - a, e, i, o, u
• Three copy cats - c, g, s
• Two sometimes vowels - y, w

GRAMMAR 101: Lesson 1 - Copy Cat "c"

The sound of the letter "c" copies "k" or "s".  It copies "s" when the letter after it is "e", "i", or "y".

Here are a few examples:

cent          city          cycle

faces        dance       glance

ice           chance      lace

race         cell          cinder

Grammar 101

How smart are you when it comes to grammar rules?  Do you remember all those little grammer clutches you learned in elementary school like:

"i before e except after c"

That's pretty much the only one that ever stuck with me.  Until now. 

Teaching Kindergarten doesn't require you to know and teach a lot of grammar rules...or so I thought.  Kindergarten is the new first grade.  Lucky for me I teach with Mrs. Lisko, a teacher who has taught for umpteen hundred years.  She's such a gem and knows grammar like the back of her hand!  I was given her grammar rule book and I have been so impressed that I feel like I have no choice, but to share with you.
